Bible Commentaries— a Basis for an Effective Bible Study Curriculum

The call for new additions in Bible study curriculum is always present. This is primarily because, just like any other fields of studies, its need to cope with the dynamic needs and interests of its ‘students’ is critical. For one, an interesting curriculum ensures an engaged audience. Relevant topics on the other hand ensure the affectivity of the study to its attendees.

Having said all these, let us now ask a very important question: What appears to be lacking in the current Bible study curriculum? There are plenty of possible answers for this question. As mentioned earlier, we have very dynamic needs and interests that are needed to be considered in order to have a good curriculum. To aid us in answering this question for the majority however let us look for answers in a place which can surely point us to a relevant direction. If we are to treat our search for an answer as a research, we would need to have review of related literatures. And where can we best find related literatures on this topic? None other than in a Christian Bookstore!

Looking through all the books and reading materials in a bookstore, we would be able to find lots of answers. We are to focus on a single topic though so we need to gather all our materials and work them out from there. We have the Purpose Driven Life, Women of the Bible, Daily Bread and the Bible itself. What is common amongst all these? All of these books are Bible centered. What then requires extreme scrutiny from us — the Bible? Well, that is a job that we are to leave to the scholars but as Christians, we can take a look at and form our own Bible commentaries!

A great suggestion, indeed! Bible commentaries have been a constantly changing aspect of the study of the Bible. Why is it so? This is most probably because of the same reason we are in need to constantly review our study curriculums and develop new topics— we are all different from one another. In a group Bible study, sharing of opinions is very critical. It is a form of an active interaction which is very important in any kind of discussion. Bible commentaries are great topics that can encourage such.

So, the next time you talk to your Bible study facilitator, take time to recommend Bible commentaries as a part of your next lesson. Do your homework before doing so though so you would be able to discuss every detail of your suggestion and eventually gain a commitment from him.
